What's happening in Wonderland?

 

We have been talking  about music in our class this week.  We discussed and looked at classical music while using terms like adagio and allegro.  A class favorite was getting on YouTube and watching STOMP  and Blue Man group videos.  Did you know that our bodies are instruments or that many of the things we use on a daily basis can make music?  Try out your trash cans or brooms and see what kind of music you can make.

 

How long was a Brontosaurus?  We compared the length of several dinosaurs using yarn.  The dinosaurs we looked at included a Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex.  A Brontosaurus was 25 yards long, which was so long even our whole class laying head to head was not even close to the same length.

We walked over to Elementary and had a brief concert performed by Alec and Nicole.  They both take piano lessons and played a few familiar songs for us.  After the concert we used all the instruments we have in our classroom and had our own parade through the school and outside.

What's new in Wonderland

We ended our Bubble week with another experiment.  What blows the best bubbles, water, juice or milk?  Check these pictures out with your child to find out the answer and maybe even try this at home.

Jameson and August are enjoying the new cars from Barnes and Noble. (Thank You parent group for helping us raise money for the new books and toys in our classrooms.)

We have been looking at and creating patterns in some of our small groups the past few weeks.  Sarah Jane made an ABB pattern using cardboard colored blocks.  Can you or your child figure out what parts of her pattern are repeating?

The Music Suite is in full swing.  We have had solo artists, bands and parades galore.  If you or someone you know would like to show off your musical talents let us know and we would be happy to invite you in.

We started talking about Dinosaurs this week. We found out we already know a lot, but there are many questions we still have.  What is the name of the small, fast dinosaur?  Did all dinosaurs lay eggs?  What was the biggest dinosaur?

This week in Roxaboxen...

Marla (our Mizzou OT student) shared a song with us.  It's to the tune of the Wheels on the Bus and we came up with ideas of sea creatures ( "The fins on the fish go swish, swish swish...all around the sea") to move instead of bus parts.

With the paper mache part of the jelly fish dry, we added some color.  We used this as an opportunity to talk about making new shades and tints of colors.

plastic wrap--the possibilities are endless!

Illustration Study in Roxaboxen-Honalee

Beginning next week, Tiffany (one of our student teachers) will be working with small groups exploring illustrations in books and the information that is conveyed in different parts of the illustration (for example colors used, expressions on faces, setting, mood of the illustrations).  She has been inspired by a book called "In Pictures and In Word" by Katie Wood Ray.  We have started sharing the many books our young authors are making and Tiffany is interested to see how this illustration study might impact their work.

Tiffany gets her group ready to go deep sea diving by putting on an imaginary diving suit.  They then added fish to the different (sunlight, twilight and dark) zones of the ocean.

We painted the ocean (on a shower curtain) by mixing blues, greens, black and white together to get the shimmery quality of the water.  The finished product will be the backdrop for more of our ocean life creations.
